Two hurt in blast at Petronas plant

KOTA KINABALU: Two workers sustained burns, one in critical condition, in an explosion at the Petronas methanol plant in Labuan yesterday.

The 10.20am explosion occurred as fabrication works were being carried out at the plant in the Rancha Rancha industrial estate.

Both workers, in their 30s and employed by a Petronas sub-contractor, have been warded at Labuan Hospital.

Labuan Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Irwan Husin said it was waiting for a report from Petronas officials.

He said four personnel and a fire engine rushed to the scene after being informed that at least one victim was pinned under the debris following the explosion.

“However, when they arrivedPetronas security personnel told them that the victim had been removed and rushed to hospital,” Irwan added.
